Overview

FontGoggles is a font viewer for various font formats. It is a desktopapplication for macOS. It is free and open source.

The main focus is text behavior, specifically text shaping and variation behavior.

You can download the latest release here.

How to use

Drop some fonts (or folders with fonts) onto the application, or launchthe application, and drop some fonts onto the window.

A new, empty window looks like this:

After dropping some fonts it will look like this:

  • Zoom in/out by using pinch gestures on your trackpad, or use ⌘-plus and ⌘-minus, or option-scroll.
  • Type text in the text field to change the displayed text
  • Drag and drop can be used to rearrange the fonts
  • Click on a font to see the glyph positioning information
  • Select glyphs by clicking on them, which will highlight glyph positioning info and character info
  • In the font list, use arrow keys to navigate glyphs and fonts

The Character and Glyph lists

On the left hand side of the FontGoggles window there are two lists.

Interact scratchpad 1 0 5 – convert text to contacts. The left-most one is the Character list, which shows the enteredcharacters and their Unicode values.

Characters are listed in logical order (first-to-last, in thenatural writing direction of the script).

The second list is the Glyph list, which can show information aboutthe rendered glyphs, such as their names, advance values and positioning.Since this information is font-specific, it only shows information whenexactly one font is selected (or when only one font has been opened).

The glyphs in the Glyph list are ordered from left to right in visualorder, or from top to bottom in vertical mode.

Selecting items in the Character list will reflect the selection in theGlyphs list and vice versa. A single glyph can belong to multiplecharacters (for example in the case of ligatures), or vice versa.

Characters and glyphs are 'clustered' by the shaping engine (HarfBuzz),and the Glyph list contains a column named 'cluster' that shows thecluster number for each glyph. For more in-depth information see theHarfBuzz documentation.Selecting a character or glyph in one list will select the entire clusterin the other list.

Both lists can be scrolled horizontally or resized to reveal more information,and columns can be rearranged by dragging them around.

You can copy information from both Character and Glyph lists by selectingrows or columns and hit ⌘-C. Select multiple rows or columns by holdingthe Command key while clicking further items. For example, click on the'glyph' header in the Glyph list to select the glyph name column, the hit⌘-C to copy the sequence of glyph names to the clipboard. If multiple columnsare involved in the selection, the clipboard data will be tab-separated, readyto be pasted into a spreadsheet.

The Font list

The Font list is the central section of the FontGoggles window. Font files can bedropped here, fonts can be selected, rearranged by dragging them around,or removed from the list with the delete key.

You can control-click on a font to get a contextual menu. The menu itemthere is to reveal the font in the Finder.

Fonts can also be dragged to other applications, which is equivalent todragging them from the finder. You can also drag and drop fonts betweenFontGoggles windows.

Text settings

At the top right of the FontGoggles window you find four buttons withpopup menus:

  • Direction/orientation
  • Visual alignment
  • Script
  • Language

The Direction/orientation menu has six options:

  • Automatic, with BiDi and Segmentation: apply the Unicode bidirectional algorithm, which will determine the dominant writing direction, as well as perform segmentation of the string based on runs with the same script and the same BiDi level.
  • Automatic, w/o BiDi and Segmentation: let HarfBuzz guess the writing direction and the script of the text, do not applying the Unicode bidirectional algorithm, and do not perform segmentation.
  • Left-to-Right: force the direction of the text to be Left-to-Right
  • Right-to-Left: force the direction of the text to be Right-to-Left
  • Top-to-Bottom: use vertical layout, Top-to-Bottom
  • Bottom-to-Top: use vertical layout, Bottom-to-Top

The Visual alignment button controls how the rendered text is visuallyaligned within the window. Its menu has four options:

  • Automatic: Use the alignment that is most natural with the detected writing direction
  • Left: align left
  • Right: align right
  • Center: align center

In vertical mode, the options are Automatic, Top, Bottom and Center.

The Script button overrides the automatic detection of the script byHarfBuzz.

The Language button allows you to specify for which language anylanguage-specific lookups will be activated.

Formatting settings

The Features panel shows the superset of GSUB and GPOS features ofall opened fonts. You can click feature tags to enable them (green),disable them (red) or use their default setting (gray). Clicking thetags cycles through the modes (gray → green → red → gray). Holding theoption key reverses the cycling direction (gray → red → green → gray).

Iconstix 3 999. For GSUB features, you can control-click (right-click) on a featuretag to get a contextual menu, allowing you to specify an alternatenumber for features that expose alternate glyphs, such as aalt.

The Variations panel shows sliders for all axes defined in the openedfonts. The minimum and maximum values for an axis are the lowest andhighest values found in all opened fonts that have that axis.

When multiple variable fonts (and/or .designspace files) are opened,all axes in all open fonts are set to their respective default values.However, since this value can be different per font, the slider willin that case show an arbitrary position, and the numeric field willbe empty as a sign there is not a single possible value.

The Options panel has three sliders and a checkbox that affect thedisplay of the text:

  • The Relative Size slider controls the relative size of the text in comparison to the box in which is is displayed. A value of 100 scales the Units Per Em value to the display box size.
  • The Baseline slider controls the baseline position, as a percentage of the display box size.
  • The Margin slider controls the left and right margins, as a percentage of the display box size. Or top and bottom in vertical layout mode.
  • The Enable Color (COLR/CPAL) checkbox allows you to choose whether color glyphs are displayed if available.

Customize the window layout

Most panels in the window are resizable, and some are collapsable.There are also 'View' menu items to show and hide the collapsablepanels:

  • Show/hide Character list — ⌘-1
  • Show/hide Glyph list — ⌘-2
  • Show/hide Compile output — ⌘-3
  • Show/hide Formatting options — ⌘-4

With another 'View' menu item you can hide or show the font file name labelsin the Font list:

  • Show/hide Font File name — ⌘-5

Load and navigate a text file

Instead of typing the text into the text field, you may load an externaltext file, using the 'Load Text File..' menu under 'View', or with the'gear' popup menu next to the text field. Rhinoceros 5 5 3 – versatile 3d modeler layout.

Once loaded, you can navigate through the lines of the text file withthe 'stepper' control next to the text field. The 'View' menu has shortcutsfor this: ⌘-arrow-key-up and ⌘-arrow-key-down to go to the previous or nextline respectively.

You can keep editing the text file in a text editor while it is loaded inFontGoggles: it will reload the text file and show the changes.

Save a project file

You can save a window as a .gggls project file. Apart from the viewedfonts, it will store all text, formatting and window settings.

Note: The file stores relative paths to the font files, so its locationis related on the location of the font files. They can move together,but if sources move or the project file moves, the source references inthe project file become invalid.

Edit a font with another application

If a font gets changed on-disk by another application, FontGoggles willreload it and show the updated version. For example, this happens, whenyou:

  • Re-generate a .ttf or .otf from a font editor.
  • Edit a .ufo with a font editor
  • Edit a .ufo with a text editor
  • Edit a .designspace file
  • Edit a .fea file associated with a .ufo or .designspace file
  • Edit a .ttx file

Note: FontGoggles does its very best to reload as quickly as possible,but for .ufo and .designspace it may have to re-compile OpenTypefeatures, and the time needed depends on the complexity of the font.

Compile warnings and errors

When an error or warning occurs during the loading of a font, thefont list will show that by highlighting the font with a diagonallystriped background. To view the error details, click on the font, andthe compile output panel at the bottom of the font list will appear.

Unicode Picker

FontGoggles provides its own Unicode Picker, under the 'Edit' menu:'Unicode Picker', shortcut ⌘-U. It allows you to find a Unicodecharacter by name.

You can use multiple search terms: each additional term will narrowdown the result. It searches by prefix, so you can for example type'ara let' to find Arabic letters.

Double click a character from the results to insert it in the front-mostFontGoggles window. Alternatively you can copy selected character fromthe results list with the 'Copy' button, or by typing ⌘-C.

Instead of searching by Unicode name, you can enter a Unicode hexvalue, such as 1F63B or with a U+, 0x, u or uni prefix.These are examples of valid Unicode literal search terms:

  • 1F63B
  • U+1F63B
  • 0x1F63B
  • u1F63B
  • uni1234

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: Can glyph names be used as text input?
  • A: No. FontGoggles uses HarfBuzz for text shaping, and for it to do its work correctly, the input has to be Unicode text. For example, to do correct shaping for the Arabic script, Unicode character attributes are needed, which are not available from glyph name input.

Implementation notes

  • HarfBuzz is used for text shaping, not CoreText
  • Hints are not taken into account: glyph rasterisation is done by the OS from unhinted outlines
  • Source formats are partially compiled, using parts of the fontmake toolchain, therefore source previews match binary fonts as built with fontmake

Welcome! This site allows you to generate text fonts that you can copy and paste into your Instagram bio. It's useful for generating Instagram bio symbols to make your profile stand out and have a little bit of individuality. After typing some text into the input box, you can keep clicking the 'show more fonts' button and it'll keep generating an infinite number of different Instagram font variations, or you can use one of the 'tried and true' fonts like the cursive text, or the other stylish text fonts - i.e. the ones that are a bit 'neater' than the others because they use a set of symbols that are closer to the normal alphabet, and are more consistent in their style.

The site works by generating a bunch of different styles using a large range of different Unicode characters. So technically you're not actually generating fonts, but instead I guess you could say you're generating Instagram-compatible Unicode glyphs :) Want to learn more about Unicode? Read on..

Unicode

Computers must store all data in a binary format - that is, with zeros and ones. So each letter that you're reading right now is stored on my server as a series of zeros and ones. That needs to go from my server to your browser, and your browser needs to understand what those zeros and ones are referring to.In the early days of computing, everyone had their own ideas about which binary codes should refer to which textual characters - there was no universal standard saying 01100001=a, 01100010=b, etc., but that changed in the 1980s with the formation of Unicode. Unicode is an international standards body that works towards a universal specification for text characters. Before Unicode was formed, everyone had their own ways of storing and rendering text, and so whenever two programs from different programmers or organisations had to 'talk' to one another, they'd have to build a 'translator' so that they could understand which codes referred to which textual characters.

Unicode had a bit of a tough time though, because all the different organisations didn't want to change their whole system around just to comply with this new spec. So Unicode had to introduce a bunch of different symbol sets to support legacy systems. Over time, the number of symbols grew into the tens of thousands, and today we're moving into the hundreds of thousands. Emojis are also text symbols, and so the new emojis that are appearing all the time are coming out of the Unicode working group.

So that's how we ended up with such a large and strange/fun array of symbols, and that's the reason you're here! I've put together a bunch of fonts for Instagram that should be fund to play with and use for your bio. You may want to mix and match certain parts from different fonts.

Text Fonts or Text Symbols?

ASCII characters are the first 128 symbols of Unicode, and these are the things that you're reading right now. But there are far more than 128 symbols in Unicode, and it just so happens that there are quite a few that look a bit like the normal Latin alphabet (i.e. that look like English text). We can take advantage of that to make 'pseudo-alphabets' which resemble normal ASCII text, but which have certain differences - such as being bolder, or italic, or even upside down! These 'alphabets' often aren't perfect - they're basically 'Unicode hacks' which take advantage of various symbols from different sets all throughout the 100k+ symbols in the standard.

The term 'font' actually refers to a set of graphics that correspond to some or all of the Unicode glyphs. You've probably heard of 'Comic Sans' and 'Arial' - these are fonts. What you're copying and pasting above are actually symbols that exist in every font. So the cursive text and other fancy letters that you're seeing above are actually separate character, just like 'a' and 'b' are separate characters.

Copy and Paste

So why doesn it matter that they're separate characters? Who cares? Well, you do! Because if they weren't (i.e. if they were just normal fonts), then you wouldn't be able to copy and paste them! You can't copy and paste some Comic Sans into your Instagram bio because the symbols the you'd be copying would just be normal ASCII characters, and the fact that they're rendered in one font on one website doesn't mean that they'll appear as that same font on another - it's up to the website owner to decide what fonts they use on their website. However, if there's a set of unicode characters that looks like a specific font, or has a particular style (e.g. bold, italic, cursive, etc.), then we can use them to 'emulate' a font that will work across different websites when you copy and paste those 'fonts'.

So really, if I were to be really pedantic, this site should be called 'pseudo instagram fonts'. But the current name gets the point across, and it's nice and short :) So, anyway, that's why you're able to copy and paste these fonts into Instagram.

Compatability

One final note: You may notice that some of the fonts don't work on Instagram. Unfortunately Instagram filters out some of the fancy letters and symbols - probably because they don't want people to abuse certain Unicode stuff like the excessive diacritics used in the 'glitch text' font that you'll see in the list.
